The Funeral

Sometimes the obvious is sheer illusion created solely in the mind of the individual. It appears to be right but for a variety of reasons it may be far from the truth. The trouble is that many people, day after day, often make assumptions about others which are entirely wrong with the wholehearted belief that they are absolutely right. A valued tome will display numerous anecdotes which indicate our thoughts towards reality most of which appear logical but are not. For example, we are taught that “seeing is believing” and “the camera never lies”. However, such bland statements are misleading to say the least. Life is far from being simply black or white. Quite the contrary. Occasionally, what people see is not real in terms of their assumptions mainly because their thinking is not lateral... it does not conform to an illogical approach which uses the imagination, as opposed to step-by-step reasoning. Consequently, assumptions which appear reasonable and logical may not represent a true picture of any situation. This means that what one sees should not necessarily be believed in reality. Take the case of the man who knew his wife was having an affair with another man. He came home especially early one day ready to catch them in the act. He knew the man was in his house and he destroyed the motor car standing outside in revenge. After a while, his wife’s lover emerged, walked a short distance away down the road to his bicycle, and pedalled off at leisure. It appeared that the wrecked motor car belonged to someone else. The obvious... his wife’s lover’s car outside his house... was sheer illusion: an assumption on the part of the husband. Alternatively, a young woman may receive a Valentine card on the fourteenth of February and assume the identity of the sender. But she may be totally wrong which person sent it, even though she has the card in front of her. Yet how is it possible for assumptions to affect anyone when attending a funeral. Surely there can be little to assume at such a sombre occasion... at a time of death! However, the effects of being wrong are with people all the time, and this is exemplified in the case identified below.

Harvey Criton-Grenville was fifty-two years old. A tall slim upright figure, he sat calmly amongst the congregation in a rear pew in the small church at St. Stephens, Treleigh, in Cornwall. He was handsomely dressed in an expensive immaculate black suit, a pure white shirt with an starched collar, gold cuff-links, and a jet-black tie. His hand-made shoes of immaculate patent leather shone so brightly it was almost possible to see one’s face in them. He held his head high, his half-closed eyes peering at the coloured glass-stained windows of the church critically. Every few minutes he gently rubbed the index finger of his right hand smoothly over his neatly-clipped moustache. It was a habit he had adopted many years earlier. The son
